More and more, traditional live music is taking in electronic music elements. Whether it's a mini-Moog next to a squawk box or a click track in a drummer's ear, more bands are incorporating circuits and computers into their performance. What's the latest in this momentum? How do musicians feel about the encroachment of technology into the performing space? What's the best way to take advantage of this technology?

Amalgamate Art+Music+Technology: Curated by Vermin Street for the Together Festival

Boston is a place where east coast grit meets intellectual academia,
where world renowned institutes of science and technology meet DIY art,
where the mass appeal of top 40 billboard and dance drives our resistance movement underground,
where a strong community thrives in the fertile sewers beneath the streets.

At the Yes Oui Si Gallery, April 20th - 24th will be a showcase of the repurposed and the recycled,
the hacked and the built from scratch.
As part of the Together Festival, Vermin Street presents: Amalgamate; Boston's culture of experiment,
where technology and art make dirty and sensuous love.
Amalgamate is a place where hardware, software, public displays of affectation, video projections
and interactive installations all assemble for you to enjoy.

Internationally, Boston's original dubstep party has made serious waves. This week, however might be the biggest one to surf. Pearson Sound (aka Ramadanman) owns the newest Fabric club mix and co-headliner Zed Bias (aka Maddslinky) could be credited with the invention of dubstep itself. Also on the bill are DJG and Moldy. A special presentation of Dubspot and Surefire Sound, expect a legion of heads at this one, but also expect your own definition of party music and dubstep to take a 180 turn. A turn towards the bass, the experimental and the straight-up inappropriate.

Great Scott (Muti Music, Scarcity Records, Olaris Records, Glitch.FM) Houston, Texas

A highly dimensional multi-faceted entity when it comes to music. His known propensities for production include breakbeats, midtempo, trip-hop, glitch-hop, dubstep, and anything just about left-of-center within such genres... but there could be many many more. His motives are two-fold: to write electronic music that contains soul and rich imagery, and to push boundaries. His influences include early-mid 90s hip-hop, big-beat and breaks, as well as obscure world and 80s music.
His music and mixes have been featured in esteemed media outlets such as XLR8R Magazine, BBC Radio 1, BBC Asian Network. His music has also appeared on major releases such as the official 2009 SF LovEvolution compilation alongside Bassnectar, Way Out West, and Hyper.
Outside of production, Great Scott is the founder and station manager for Internet radio station Glitch.FM and an arts and entertainment organizer for the world's largest hacking convention, DEFCON.

JSB (True Crew, Breaker's Paradise, Space, Monstamind) Boston, MA

The man behind Boston's new breakbeat night, Breaker's Paradise. JSB's sets have been described as "room-shaking, hard-hitting, booty-bouncing, head-nodding cocktail of awesomeness!" JSB has been spinning since 2000 but has finally hit the scene hard. Starting in 2008 in the underground he continues to hold down one of the best lofts Boston has ever scene. Throwing one successful party after the next JSB is ready to bring his style of music and parties to the masses! Always known for taking "risks" live and working in a lot of remixes JSB's favorite part of electronic music is the "what's gonna happen next?" factor. Breaks is the perfect genre for him as he has embraced the challenge of combining big beat sounds from every genre of breaks into a cohesive sound that always shocks people and has them wondering what tracks were those, and did he do that mix live or was it all one track?

Future Rock
Mickey Kellerman and Felix Moreno, alongside drummer Darren Heitz, are the driving force behind Future Rock. During their explosive live show, all three mibers wield synthesizers, live loops and samples-Kellerman on the keys, Moreno on the bass, Heitz on drums-to form an amalgamation of excitient, constructed completely live onstage. The Chicago trio has been perfecting its brand of live-instrument dance music since 2004 and-just like Future Rock’s pulsating and escalating anthis-their momentum is about to explode.

Maxwell Dulaney: Breathed, for flute and electronics. Breathed is based on the elemental timbres inherent in the relationship between the breath and the flute. All of the source material for the electronic part is derived from the analysis and electronic manipulation of flute samples.

Jeremy Spindler: Glassworks and Silverscapes, for stereo playback.  The first movement to the piece, originally a one-movement work entitled Silverscapes, utilizes the sound of silverware being dropped into a large steel bowl.  About two years later I composed Glassworks, which, like Silverscapes, was originally conceived as a one-movement work. I had especially liked the metallic sounds and rich overtones I had produced in Silverscapes so I used similar sources for Glassworks—a plate, bowl, and drinking glasses. Instead of dropping these objects into a steel bowl they were scraped and struck, mostly with silverware. The resulting sounds were similar to those in Silverscapes, but have their own distinct quality. After completing Glassworks I realized the two pieces worked quite well together as a two-movement work and Glassworks and Silverscapes came together as one.

Justin Casinghino: Tangled, for piano and live electronics. Tangled is a duet for solo pianist and live signal processing. The piece is a musical reflection upon the general intertwined relationships of humans, nature and music, and in particular how these elements interact during the summers at the Tanglewood Music Festival.

Keith Kirchoff: Overdrive, for toy piano, live electronics and fixed mediaComposed in 2010, OverDrive is a composition for toy piano and live electronics that challenges the notion of what a toy piano can or cannot do.

Mike Frengel: Hotbird, for electric guitar and electronics. One of the primary concerns in Hotbird is for the treatment of electronics as an extension of the live instrument. As with most of my mixed works, the electronics consist of a combination of pre-produced sounds and live processing.

Christopher Bailey: Harvest Kitchen IIA, for 8-channel playbackThe title refers to the Harvestworks media center in New York City; I am grateful for a residency there that enabled the realization of this composition. It also refers obliquely to a messy ex-housemate of mine, in whose house many of the sounds in this work were recorded.

Sarah Fylak: Aye, Wonder, for violin, voice and electronics. The text of Aye, Wonder is comprised of excerpts from the poem Alice in Wonder by Luisa Inés Garcia.

Mammox: Facture/Phantanimals, mixed ensemble. Facture/Phantanimals is a medley of mixed works for triggered electronics, live instruments and voice, which explores additive rhythmic processes and atypical song form in the context of experimental hip hop.

MUSIC INDUSTRY AND THE POST-BLOG INTERNET

Unlike any music that has come before, electronic music has taken full advantage of the opportunities the internet provides. Is this simply because the music is electronic? Is it the producers who have grown up with the internet? And more importantly, what is the best way to discover new music and how, devoid of labels and a traditional music industry, is this all going to work? These experts speak up.

-------------------------------------------------------

About the Artists:
AEROJET is the solo project of Joel Friedman, the sound designer and producer who represents one half of the Boston based laptop duo known as Dice Motion. Fusing glitch aesthetics with warped field recordings, modern classical harmonies, jingles, jangles, noisy tape loops, and liquid hip hop beats, the AEROJET sound is thick with ear candy. Whether rummaging through the past for buried sonic treasures, recording and mangling sounds of the present, or voyaging into futuristic landscapes, AEROJET leads the listener into a minefield of sonic exploration.

Curated by Austin Stone and Tyler Randall, Phonoride is a social experiment for collaborating artists and producers to perform improvised electronic music. Artists from Boston to NYC compile sonic gestures, audio programming environments, and dance remixes in Phonoride's live performances. Phonoride ties in the enticing structure of John Zorn game pieces with the heightened production integrity of Daft Punk. Expect a palette of edgy dance rhythms with savory improvised melodies and submersible timbres!

Fat Camp is the stage name of Boston, MA based musician Clark Burkhardt. With influences spanning from producers like Dimlite, Madlib, and J Dilla to composers and instrumentalists like Alice Coltrane and Wes Montgomery, Fat Camp's fidgety glitch-hop beats are as much accessible as they are unpredictable. Performing an all-original, all-electronic hip-hop set that melds sonic landscapes from alien planets with wonky, undulating beats, Fat Camp consistently gets heads bobbing at warehouses, loft spaces, house parties and clubs in and around Boston.

Egyptrixx

With the tons of hyped up (but utterly mediocre) dance music that comes out these days, it's pretty hard to stand apart from the herd; not the case with Toronto's Egyptrixx. In just over one year, his distinct sonic aesthetic has become an acclaimed presence in underground music, garnering praise from heavyweight DJ's, including Sinden, Mary Ann Hobbs and Drop the Lime, and influential publications such as Fader, Xlr8r and The Wire... LOL Boys

LOL Boys, along with a growing number of new school producers, are encroaching on uncharted sounds in today's dance music scene: a fair bit of latin beats, a lot of house, and an inability to name exactly what it all might be. The forward-thinking producers are fueled by equal parts shuffling tropical percussion, romantic synths, pitch-shifted vocals, and a hearty dose of booming bass. | LOL Boys have done a variety of remixes over the past... Together Festival presents: Maya Jane Coles with Volvox and D-Lux
Limited Capacity seats available

2010 was certainly the year that 23 year old Maya Jane Coles announced herself as one of the most talented up and coming artists in electronic music.

In the years preceding a steady output of techy cuts on labels such as Dogmatik and 1trax simmered away catching the attention of cluded up heads and savy A&R people alike. It was her debut EP on Franck Roger’s Real Tone though that ignited the fire of hype and boosted her profile o...n the global stage receiving heavy support from the house & techno elite. Aside from being hammered repeatedly on the worlds most happening dance floors ‘What They Say’ reached the number 1 spot on across the board; Beatport Deep House Chart No. 1, Traxsource top download & Resident Advisors most charted tracks for October. It’s safe to say the release won the hearts and heads of fans and critics alike and a landmark year was topped off with a nomination for Best Breakthrough Producer nomination in the DJ Mag Best of British awards.

Not one to fall victim to the pitfalls of being one of the scenes ‘buzz names’, Maya has built on her flourishing reputation with a slew of gigs across Europe holding her own alongside world renowned DJs. Her schedule for 2011 has been jam packed with dates across Europe; London’s Fabric, Batofar and Watergate, and the iconic Glastonbury Festival.

We are very excited to welcome this rising star to Make It New for the Together Festival!

To round out this ALL FEMALE DJ LINEUP we have opening sets by MiN resident Volvox and guest D Lux.

Together Discussion Panel - The Genre of Hype

Dubstep has gone overground. The genre is now on the lips of the biggest pop stars and the largest parties. How did it make the leap into such stunning popularity? What should the reaction be from its earliest proponents? And what exactly is dubstep anyway? Some of the scene's brightest minds discuss what to do when the music you love blows up.

Deconstructing Dad

The film Deconstructing Dad The Music, Machines & Mystery of Raymond Scott, by Stan Warnow, is a comprehensive, biographical exploration of the life of Stan’s father, musician/inventor Raymond Scott. Swing music, music for film, cartoons, records, TV and radio—Raymond Scott created all this and much more in a career that spanned most of the 20th century. Most pertinent to the festival is his status as an electronic production icon. As early as the 1930s, he was manipulating sound electronically and in 1946 he created Manhattan Research, which manufactured instruments like the “keyboard theremin” and “circle generators.” An extraordinary examination of an extraordinary life.  all ages/free. berklee.edu]

toUch presents DJ THE WIG

if classical music is dying...let's help kill it." Classical music reinvented for the 21st century.

AcousticaELECTRONICA  brings together young talent from the New England Conservatory, The Boston Conservatory and beyond to express their diverse musical realities, which include both classical and non-classical influences. The show's theme brings classical and electronic genres into conversation with one another.

Classical music has been reinterpreted/reinvented/remixed with electronic music giving a fresh new voice to a beautiful tradition. The WIG will spin with live string quartet, guitar, vocals and piano.  Daring staging and dance will accompany the music.

Soundpainting is a sign language for creating live composition from structured improvisation. This is a community music-making event for any number of participants, with or without musical experience.  There are no mistakes, you are encouraged to color outside the lines.

The Boston Soundpainting Orchestra will lead the audience in creating live compositions blended with pre-recorded music that the audience will hear later in the main act of the performance. This way the audience will participate in the music they will later hear, breaking down the space between the performer and audience.  Visual artist Josh Wisdumb will improvise on canvas.

PERILEYES
Perileyes is the combined auditory endeavors of Liam Collins and Sheridan Willard. Meeting just under two years ago, the two immediately began combining efforts, crafting an imaginative musical aesthetic that is both wide in its spectrum yet cohesive as a whole. At ages 20 and 21, this young team has created a unique and intelligent style of electronic music. Their diverse sonic palette is largely attributed to their deep and eclectic interests both musical and otherwise.

ALI BERGER
Ali Berger is a producer, DJ, and live PA from Princeton, NJ. His music is sometimes chilled out, sometimes heavy, but always glitchy, electronic, and above all, funky. His live shows incorporate on-the-fly mashups and remixes of music ranging from dubstep to glitch-hop to drum & bass, plus versions of his own tunes re-arranged live and cut together with other tracks. You can catch him rocking shows solo and with the Lost in Bass crew around New Jersey and Boston, and his first EP, Departures, dropped for free on June 1st, 2010 at

DJ FOGES
These days, people want unique and organic. That's what Benjamin Fogel provides. Also known as FOGES, Fogel has been producing and DJing house/electronic and dubstep music since 2007. The Albany, New York native was influenced by his time playing guitar in a progressive rock band as well as his experience attending Camp Bisco, a musical festival just outside Albany. There, he was exposed to the electronic music scene and instantly knew what direction his music would take. Over the past three years, FOGES has experimented with many different forms of music, ranging from primitive to acousmatic genres. Through this wide range of influences, an original and organic sound was born, unique and appealing to a wide variety of listeners. His experiences studying music technology and composition in Boston, Mass. have also influenced his musical performance. FOGES currently performs a forever-morphing style of music in venues around the Northeast.

Dubspot & Bassic present Goth Trad, XI and Richard Devine

Not content to lay down one incredible line-up for the festival, Bassic Boston has a second run at the castle with London-based Japanese dubstep phenom Goth Trad, Canadian dubstep producer XI, and guests. Goth-Trad (of Rebel Familia) has emerged from the Japanese electronic scene in the last few years as one of the most arresting artists from his generation. Toronto’s XI has quickly become a rising star in the city’s electronic music scene and his eclectic taste and approach to bass-driven beats has landed him on the bill with Prodigy Live and Pendulum. The Get Together at MassArt presented by Together and Boston Cyberarts

FREE TO ATTEND

The Get Together is the Together Festival’s signature daytime event. Combining a vinyl record fair, installations and performances by local artists, a fashion presentation and music software and hardware developers demonstrating their products, this event paints a holistic portrait of electronic music culture outside the club.

It is on April 23rd from noon-6pm in the Pozen Center at MassArt and the adjoining Room 181. This year's Get Together is being co-branded with the Boston Cyberarts Festival to draw an even bigger crowd of music, art and technology enthusiasts than last year. There will be all manner of electronic music fans in town, people who sample, people who produce and traditional vinyl heads.

In a lively market atmosphere, visitors are encouraged to mingle with new acquaintances made during the week of the festival and explore this multi-room event. Screenings are running nonstop during the event showing films related to electronic music and lifestyle.

For the fashion presentation, incumbent designer-stylists Deconize and Lady Charlie Lamb are joined by Tess Aquarium, presenting collections that combine original and reworked vintage garments and accessories responding to stylistic niches plucked from the course of electronic music’s vibrant history.

It wouldn’t be a New England electronic music festival without the participation of one DJ Chris Ewen. Hard to overstate how important this man is in the history of the scene. Weather making music, DJing nights of legend or holding it down at Heroes, forget it. He’s brought in a special guest for this year: DJ Ian Fford. Fford is the premier New York City subculture rock goth electro DJ, with a legacy nearly as deep as Ewen himself. This isn’t your momma’s ‘80s party. Japanese master turntablist DJ Kentaro does things with the decks no man should, making mincemeat of dancefloors around the world. Support comes from Basstown residents DJ Die Young and Volvox. Kentaro

Ninja Tune's DJ Kentaro is among Japan's premier hip-hop turntablists. When he's not touring with hip-hop royalty such as the Roots and the Pharcyde or remixing tracks for Spank Rock, he keeps himself busy by shattering high-score records in turntable competitions such as the DMC World DJ Final, a competition Kentaro won at the tender age of 20 years old. The Shuttle sound is boundless, genreless, and in constant flux – a sonic chameleon, not changing with the times, but stretching the musical landscape to its inevitable evolution. Shuttle found a home for his original sounds amongst the underground Boston musical scene. His unique live shows are now all but infamous within the tightly knit Basstown crew. Together Boston: Steve Porter

Your homegrown hero, STEVE PORTER, is back in Boston on SATURDAY, APRIL 23rd at ROYALE NIGHTCLUB!!!

STEVE PORTER
Something of a child prodigy from a famous father, but his first love & choice was always music. Discovering electronic sounds at 16 years old, Steve dove deeply into it all. Along with his mother, he loaded on decks and studio gear to start learning the art of DJing and productions. When some tracks fell into Chris Fortier’s hands, it really started moving. Support quickly followed from so many of Steve’s DJ heroes. Many labels from around the globe took notice of Steve’s talent and the remix offers started pouring in with most recently the next single from Iio called “Smooth”.

2003 was another banner year for the boy wonder with his big time single “Definite Form” and his now classic remix of Amber’s “Anyway”. Adding to that his underground side projects Agent 001, HDF & Bons and his looming artist album, his music sees huge support across the spectrum of DJs from Sasha & John Digweed to Carl Cox to Mark Farina and Derek Carter.

His debut artist album Homegrown (2005) propelled him onto the international stage and lauded standing as one of DJ Times' "America's Best DJs". Porter's driving, dynamic DJing style has been captured on his compilations Porterhouse (2006) and Porterhouse Volume 2 (2007). Now his own label, PH Recordings focuses on introducing new artists from his own collective of Boston artists, other emerging global acts and as an outlet for his own productions.

Now having toured the world (a few times over), he has embarked on his newest adventure, with the creation of Porterhouse Media, a full-service multi-media company. Known for video remixes and mash-ups like "Press Hop", "Rap Chop" & "Sheen Hop", Steve's talents have given him the opportunity to work with companies like the NBA, NFL and ESPN. In other words, he's not slowing down any time soon.

Gallery Reception with free vegan goodies! Reception times are 3:30pm to 7:00pm.

Together Festival presents Trentemøller [Live w/Band]

Though the tin says we end on the 24th, we couldn’t say no to this closing event, featuring the Boston debut of Trentemøller with live band! This Danish producer is best known for his remixes of The Knife and Royksopp, but his live show is another thing altogether. Fusing the best of his swoon-worthy sound with a rock and roll backbone, the spectacle that is his band is only exceeded by its pure sonic force. This blend of live and electronic is the perfect ending to Together. With opener Dorit Chrysler and special guests. [Royale, 279 Tremont St., Boston. 7pm/18+/$18. royaleboston.com]

Hot Pink Delorean

Since 2007, Hot Pink Delorean have been an impossible to ignore presence in Boston's dance music scene. The trio of Chris Barlow, John Spero and Matt Simmers had already made a name for themselves in the drum and bass community as Terravita when they first decided to try their hand at electro. Four years on, the HPD sound has gone international, with regular radio play on the BBC and featured tracks on releases from Mixmag and Dim Mak Records.
